Exterior Details

"The Devil is in the Details," is a statement that fits the Victorian design philosophy. The level of exterior detail that adorns the remaining original Victorian buildings around the world sets these buildings apart from most modern structures. In an attempt to stay true to this design style, we did not settle for standard exterior construction practices.

Slate shingles, quaried in Vermont, are crested with Victorian-style "Dragon-Back," copper, roof-cresting. The front turret is capped with a copper spire, and the center roofline is capped with an intricate, black, steel, roof-cresting. All of these metallic elements are connected together within the roof structure with heavy-copper wires as part of an intergrated, lightning-protection system.

Note the design and details of the two chimneys. The decorative, terra cotta quoins that are inset in the chimneys are architectural salvage from the turn of the century. Inside, the chimneys are constructed with modern, triple-walled stainless steel casings, but on the exterior, these chimneys are as ornate and decorative as any original period homes whould have had. Our bricklayer was extraordinary; one of our best contractors!
