The sixty-acre section of land that we purchased had previously been farmland, and had never been used as a homesite. For this reason, we were able to choose exactly where we wanted to locate our house, and to select how it was positioned on that spot. The house sits on a hill-top at the back of the lot, accessible by a long, curved drive. Conventional, modern, building techniques were used wherever it was practical to do so. The tall walls and complex roofline presented considerable challenges. A structure this tall had to be "engineered," a process usually reserved for commercial buildings. The engineering drawings specified interior wall reinforcing pillars at strateigic locations. The resulting finished structure is far more rigid and sound than a house built to conventional homebuilders' specifications. The basement walls were double-reinforced with steel rebar, and were poured with commercial forms, producing 12 to 24-inch thick walls.
